Careers & Opportunities
The DataVerse Blog works with volunteers and collaborators interested in data, AI, and digital systems in African contexts.
This page outlines the roles we currently work with and how to express interest in contributing to the publication and, where relevant, to related work at DataVerse Ghana.
All roles listed here are currently volunteer-based unless stated otherwise.
Volunteer roles
The DataVerse Blog collaborates with contributors across a small number of defined roles. These roles reflect how the publication currently operates and may evolve over time as editorial needs and capacity change.
Editorial & Writing
Writer
Writers contribute essays, analysis, and field reflections on data, AI, and digital systems in African contexts. Contributors may draw on lived experience, research exposure, or practical involvement in relevant fields.
Writers work closely with editors to refine structure, clarity, and focus.
Editor
Editors support the review and development of submitted pieces. This includes providing structural feedback, improving clarity, and supporting light fact-checking where appropriate.
This role is suited to people with strong editorial judgement who are interested in shaping thoughtful, accessible analysis.
Newsletter Editor
The newsletter editor supports the curation and presentation of selected writing for the DataVerse Blog newsletter. This includes selecting pieces, shaping short editorial notes, and maintaining a consistent tone.
This role is suited to people interested in editorial curation and reader engagement rather than original writing alone.
Research & Analysis Support
Research Assistant
Research assistants support background research for selected pieces. This may include sourcing references, reviewing literature, compiling context, or assisting with verification.
This role is well suited to students or early-career researchers interested in applied research and editorial work.
Visual & Storytelling
Graphic Designer
Graphic designers support the visual presentation of selected pieces and editorial projects. This includes creating simple visuals, diagrams, or graphic treatments that help clarify ideas and complement the writing.
This role is suited to designers interested in editorial work who value clarity, restraint, and thoughtful visual communication over decorative or marketing-focused design.
Platform & Publishing
Digital Publishing Editor
The digital publishing editor supports the structure, presentation, and technical organisation of the blog. This may include working on layouts, content organisation, accessibility, or publishing workflows.
This role is suited to contributors interested in the systems and processes that support editorial work rather than software product development.
Social Media Manager
Social media managers support the distribution and visibility of published work from the DataVerse Blog. This includes planning posts, adapting excerpts for different platforms, and helping the publication reach relevant audiences thoughtfully.
This role is suited to people interested in editorial social media, audience engagement, and communicating ideas clearly without clickbait or hype.
